Just days after former President Donald Trump was projected to have won the presidency, Trump's transition team operation has begun, with transition co-chairs confirming that he will be selecting personnel to serve under his leadership in the coming days.

Trump is also the projected winner in Arizona, a state the former president flipped after losing it to Joe Biden in 2020.

Trump's projected win in the vital swing state marks a sweep of the battleground states.

Mitch McConnell congratulates Trump

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who is leaving GOP leadership, addressed reporters Wednesday in the Capitol for the first time since Republicans seized control of the Senate.

“It’s certainly a happy day for the GOP. And let me start by congratulating President Donald Trump. What he’s accomplished has not been done… since Grover Cleveland -- which is a while back," McConnell said.

McConnell said the results of the election were a “referendum of the current administration in part -- people were just not happy with this administration and obviously the Democratic nominee was a part of it."

McConnell said "the filibuster is very secure" with Republicans controlling the Senate.

"One of the most gratifying results of the Senate becoming Republican -- the filibuster will stand, there won’t be any new states admitted to give a partisan advantage to the other side and we'll quit beating up the Supreme Court every time we don’t like a decision they make. So, I think this shifting to a Republican Senate Majority helps have control of the guard rails," he said.

Will the same candidate win the Electoral College and the popular vote?

One thing I'll be keeping an eye on as results start to come in is how the electoral votes are stacking up compared to the popular vote. In each of the past two elections, Trump lost the popular vote, but he lost the Electoral College only once. According to 538's final election forecast, we see a repeat of that split in around 21 in 100 simulations. For Harris, an Electoral College win with a popular vote loss is far less likely, with only a few simulations sitting in the top right quadrant of our Electoral College vs. popular vote scatter plot.

Either way, a split outcome could inspire calls to abolish the Electoral College — in a YouGov/The Economist poll last week, 54% of Americans agreed that the winner of the presidential election should be the candidate with the most votes nationwide, while only 28% said they would favor the current system.
