Breast Cancer Breakdown: Helpful Resources

Oct. 28, 2013— -- More people are surviving breast cancer, thanks in part to early detection. But the disease continues to kill 40,000 American women each year.

There are steps you can take now to reduce your breast cancer risk. That's why ABC News is going pink for October: to raise awareness about breast health and how you can protect yourself.

Throughout the month, we'll bring you the latest screening recommendations, signs and symptoms to look out for, and lifestyle changes that can lower your risk. Armed with the facts, you can take our pledge to understand your risk and get the screening tests that are appropriate for you.

But because breast health should be a year-long priority, we're also giving you a listed of trusted resources. Think of them as a jumping-off point for conversations with your doctor about your personal risk factors and the tests and treatments that are right for you.

Breastcancer.org is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to "help women and their loved ones make sense of the complex medical and personal information about breast cancer, so they can make the best decisions for their lives."

The American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping you "stay well and get well" by outlining the screening tests and treatments that could be right for you.

The National Cancer Institute

The National Cancer Institute is the federal agency tasked with supporting research and programs dedicated to cancer prevention and "the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients."
