The official trailer for the Disney+ series "American Born Chinese" debuted Friday on "Good Morning America."

Based on Gene Luen Yang's 2006 graphic novel of the same name, "American Born Chinese" stars Ben Wang as Jin Wang, your average American teenager who is just trying to balance his home life and school life. That all changes when Jin befriends the new foreign exchange student, Wei-Chen (Jim Liu), and he finds himself caught up in a magical battle involving mythological Chinese gods and kung fu.

"I just want to be a regular guy who does regular stuff," Jin says in the trailer, just before we see Wei-Chen break out some incredible martial arts moves.

"I'm not from this world," Wei-Chen replies when Jin asks what is going on, adding, "I need your help with my quest to stop the uprising."

We then learn via a voiceover that "the gate between Earth and heaven is opening."

Having already popped up earlier in the trailer, Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh's character Guanyin issues an important warning, saying, "You must stop it or everyone will perish. The fate of your world hangs in the balance."

As Jin wonders what role he has to play in all of this otherworldly drama, Wei-Chen tells him he is his "guide."

The trailer ends with Guanyin issuing one more teaser, saying, "Everything is more connected than you think."

"American Born Chinese" is a mini "Everything Everywhere All at Once" reunion, as Yeoh is reunited with fellow Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, who plays Freddy Wong. There's also a brief glimpse of Stephanie Hsu in the trailer.

Kelvin Yu serves as showrunner for the series, which is directed by "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" director Destin Daniel Cretton. Both serve as executive producers.

Also in the cast, in addition to the aforementioned stars, are Yeo Yann Yann as Christine Wang, Chin Han as Simon Wang, Sydney Taylor as Amelia and Daniel Wu as Sun Wukong, aka "The Monkey King."

"American Born Chinese" debuts May 24 on Disney+.
