April 29, 2014 — -- "The Amazing Spider-Man's" Andrew Garfield made waves last week during a cringe-worthy media day moment.

The actor explained to a young fan how Spider-Man sewed his own outfit and called that act "feminine," which resulted in his girlfriend and co-star Emma Stone calling him out and asking him to clarify what he meant.

Stone, 25, interrupted, asking, "It's feminine, how?" -- prompting Garfield to respond, "It's amazing how you took that as an insult."

On Sunday, Garfield, 30, clarified that comment, saying he was talking more about "feminine energy" that's in every man and woman, not gender.

Garfield told reporters during a Worldwide Orphans event in New York City that "I am absolutely a feminist. I was when I was born. That's just an innate value system I was born with."

Having said that, Garfield said he shares that same "feminine" quality with someone else in a position of power - President Obama.

"Say what you want about Barack Obama, there is a femininity about Barack Obama, a sensitivity, a compassion, I feel like women respond to it, as well," he said.

Garfield added that "in terms of equal rights and in terms of any kind of gender stereotypes," he always sides with feminists.

As for his relationship with Stone, Garfield spoke out about his girlfriend on Monday while on "Good Morning America," calling her a "genius."

"She has found her genius and she’s doing it so beautifully,” Garfield said. “I think everyone who works with her, everyone who brushes shoulders with her or even makes eye contact with her gets a shot of sunshine.”

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" hits theaters nationwide this Friday.

Worldwide Orphans is an organization aimed at transforming "the lives of orphaned children to help them become healthy, independent, productive members of their communities and the world."
