"The New Mutants," the final "X-Men" universe film from 20th Century Fox, will finally see the light of day in the dark of a movie theater.

Disney announced the movie will debut August 28.

The psychological thriller -- starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton -- was shot in 2017, before Disney's acquisition of the studio, and has had a rocky road to launch.

The movie, about a spooky facility where young mutants are pushed to their psychological and physical limits, was supposed to hit theaters April 13, 2018. Its release was bumped to Feb. 22, 2019, and later moved to Aug. 2, 2019. Re-shoots were expected, but didn't happen.

Things changed when Disney acquired the now re-titled 20th Century Films, and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige got some input into the movie. Some predicted that the movie would go straight to Disney+, considering the COVID-19 theater closings and the dismal box office fate of the "X-Men" film that preceded it, "Dark Phoenix."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, under Feige, re-shoots weren't ordered, though "The New Mutants" reportedly got some enhanced visual effects for its long-delayed theatrical run.

Disney is the parent company of ABC News.
