'Fresh Off the Boat' star Randall Park to make TV directorial debut with series finale
After six years of bringing laughter and Asian American representation to television, "Fresh off the Boat" is coming to an end. Created by Nahnatchka Khan and inspired by Eddie Huang’s memoir, the sitcom is focused on the Huang family’s life in Florida.
The hour-long finale will air on February 21, and Randall Park, who plays patriarch Louis Huang, will make his TV directorial debut directing the final episode of the series.
“I am so thrilled to be directing the series finale of 'Fresh Off The Boat.' This show, aside from being hilarious and full of heart from beginning to end, has provided so many opportunities for so many of us," Park told "Good Morning America." “And the fact that they’ve bestowed me with the honor of making my TV directorial debut for our final episode is yet another reason why I’m eternally grateful for this groundbreaking series."
Praised for bringing diversity to the small screen, "Fresh off the Boat" helped changed the industry narrative. It made television history as the first network show starring Asian Americans to reach syndication, and the first to air more than 100 episodes.
Just last week, "Fresh off the Boat," which airs on ABC, was honored with the “Legacy Award” at the Unforgettable Gala, where Constance Wu, who plays Jessica Huang on the show, talked about her reaction when she read the final script.
“I was really sad. I’m sad that it’s ending, I really love the boys, I really love the crew," she told "GMA." “But one thing that’s exciting is that Randall Park is directing the episode. That’s really exciting for us because we love him. It’s such a nice way to finish."
Coming off of the success of the show and his recent hit "Always Be My Maybe," Park is looking forward to more projects in the new year. He recently signed an overall deal with TCFTV to develop, create and write new projects for the studio.
