Nine Inch Nails duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have scored a number of unique films and TV shows over the years, but they may have found their most unexpected project yet in "Soul," a new film from animation giant Pixar.

Yes, the man who recorded "Closer" is writing music for a movie from the studio behind "Toy Story."

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Reznor acknowledged the strangeness of the collaboration.

"It feels very authentic, it feels very exciting," Reznor said. "And it's very, very different from anything else we've ever done, from the way [Pixar] do it to how they think about it."

Reznor admitted that he and Ross are a "risky choice" for Pixar, which he said makes the project "very appealing."

"Can we do something like that? That means us working out of our comfort zone," he said. "It's early days but it's been really cool."

When the interviewer suggested that Pixar fans might discover a song like "Closer" thanks to "Soul," Reznor responded, "Who knows? We'll see if we can taint Pixar and darken them up."

"Soul," which hits theaters June 2020, is one of the many items on Reznor and Ross' ever-full plate, along with scoring HBO's "Watchmen" series and the upcoming film "Waves."

As for their main gig, Reznor said he has "plans for Nine Inch Nails stuff."

"We haven't got down to doing it because literally every minute of the day for the last several months has working on score stuff," Reznor explained. "But the plan is to do stuff, yes."

Pixar is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
