Kelly Ripa wants her daughter to feel like she's away from home during college at New York University

When it comes to being a mom, Kelly Ripa just wants the best for her children and their growth.

So, when her daughter Lola was choosing a college, she had a rational reason for wanting her NOT to be close to home.

After dropping her daughter off at New York University recently, Ripa opened up about the experience Tuesday with "On Air with Ryan Seacrest."

"When we sat down and discussed which school you should go to ... My main concern was I don't know if you should be this close to home because I don't want you using home like it's your home; I want you to have an experience," she said.

Basically, Ripa wants her daughter to work things out and not be able to use her parents and home as a fallback.

"College is where you start establishing yourself as an independent person," she told her "Live" co-host. "When you send your kid away to college, if your kid stays sort of local, you get all of the hassle of sending your kid away to college and none of the sympathy."

Ripa said having Lola so close puts her in an awkward situation, but one she is prepared for because she wants her daughter to grow and blossom.

"If she feels homesick, I have to say to her, 'You can't come home. You have to work it out,'" Ripa added. "I did the same thing with my son [Michael]. I'm like, 'You're gonna have to figure out how to be an adult — this is when you figure it out.'"

Ripa has been celebrating her daughter's milestone though through amazing graduation and prom pictures.

"The nest is getting roomy," she wrote last month, giving her daughter a huge kiss.

Before that she shared pics from her graduation party and ceremony.

"The Graduate," she captioned the pictures earlier this summer.
