Spider-Man: What you need to know and why everyone is freaking out
Everyone just calm down for one second!
After news broke Tuesday that Sony and Marvel had shut down talks to extend a partnership they began a few years back to use Spider-Man in upcoming Marvel films -- including "Avengers" -- and have Kevin Feige continue to guide Spidey's solo projects, fans ... lost ... their ... minds.
Take Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds.
After a fan asked if the 20th Century Fox superstar could make this right and give us a Spider-Man/Deadpool movie, he answered, "You can only see it in my heart."
Even Jeremy Renner, who played Hawkeye in the "Avengers," commented, "Hey @sonypictures we want Spider-Man back to @therealstanlee and @marvel please, thank you #congrats #spidermanrocks #please."
Other fans had more dramatic reactions.
"Tony did not DIE for this," one wrote about the end of "Endgame," with the "#SaveSpiderMan" tag trending on Twitter from thousands of fans.
So, here's the deal
We don't know yet what's really happening and NOTHING has been officially announced by Marvel or Disney.
As Deadline reported, a deal suitable for both parties simply couldn't be reached between Sony and Marvel Studios, and now Feige will now step away to focus on his own studio and universe.
It's certainly a huge hit for Sony to loose a genius like Feige, who basically built a superhero empire.
So, what could happen is the solo movies run on their own at Sony moving forward. And only time will tell how that goes.
But this is all still fresh and fans hope Marvel can still work out a new deal to at least borrow Spidey for future MCU pictures like the next "Avengers" or something else.
One fan joked, "In two months from now Sony and Disney better come back together with an 'We were on a break' excuse."
The future is female - or at least for a few years
What you have to remember is Marvel is currently pivoting in phase 4 after the events of "Endgame."
Some of the old guard is gone and new blood is being brought in to lead like "Captain Marvel." So, there's time.
Studio execs, of course, want Spider-Man involved moving forward but the slate of phase 4 movies dropped last month at Comic-Con doesn't necessarily call for a team-up just yet or the use of Peter Parker.
With films like "Black Widow," "The Eternals" and a new "Thor," featuring Natalie Portman as the Goddess of Thunder, the future is female and Marvel is laying the foundation for something huge we can't visualize yet as fans.
Also, there's the Fox acquisition that Feige is certainly very involved in, including the incorporation of Deadpool into the MCU.
Reynold's Merc with a Mouth is another billion-dollar baby that the MCU mastermind is certainly trying to figure out.
And don't get us started on "X-Men."
So, while Feige could certainly do it all -- Spider-Man, the MCU, Deadpool and more -- he's got enough to keep him busy, until a deal that works for both Marvel and Sony can be met.
What can the fans do?
Nothing really.
The fans have made themselves heard loud and clear. And Marvel isn't the type of studio to ignore their core audience.
Um, did you see "Endgame," a gift of epic proportions to the fans that had been loyal to the MCU since 2008's "Iron Man."
But with that said, if there really is a split that sticks for a few years, Deadline reports that two more Spider-Man films are on the way.
Sony will do its best to keep Tom Holland happy in the lead and keep Jon Watts directing him.
It's also worth noting that Sony could then try and unite Spider-Man and Venom again (another Sony owned property), though their first attempt back in "Spider-Man 3" didn't go so well.
There's also the possibility of a Spider-Verse with classic villains and Spidey dueling it out in various films for years to come.
Then? A glorious comeback.
