Taylor Swift makes history with 1st-ever VMAs Artist Director Honors
Taylor Swift made history at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the first recipient of the Artist Director Honors.
Dakota Johnson presented Swift with the inaugural award Sunday, recognizing the singer-songwriter's work behind the camera and contributions to music video storytelling.
"Taylor Swift is a storyteller," Johnson said. "She is an architect of emotional landscapes filled with the most intimate and intricate detail."
Johnson, who stars alongside Colin Farrell in Swift's new "Patient Zero" music video, also reflected on Swift's career as a director.
"Taylor has spent the majority of her life on set, telling tales and building worlds," Johnson said. "She isn't just one of the most decorated artists in the history of the VMAs. She is the single most recognized video director in this show's history."
A montage highlighting Swift's work behind the camera played before she took the stage to accept the honor.
"I got to start making music videos and being a part of music videos 20 years ago, and since then I've gotten to be a part of making 60 music videos, roughly 60," Swift said. "Eighteen of those I wrote and directed, and I really love writing and directing music videos."
Swift said her fans are a major reason she continues to enjoy creating music videos.
"The main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun," she said. "You make it so rewarding because you actually care about what we're making."
Following her acceptance speech, Swift premiered the music video for her new single, "Patient Zero," which she directed and stars in alongside Johnson and Farrell.
The cinematic video follows Johnson as the new girlfriend of Farrell's character, while Swift portrays his former lover. Cara Delevingne also makes a surprise appearance.
The video, directed by Swift, stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell and features cinematography by Academy Award winner Emmanuel Lubezki, whose credits include "The Revenant," "Birdman" and "Gravity."
Swift released "Patient Zero" on Friday with "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore," an expanded edition of her 2025 album featuring four new songs: "Patient Zero,""Cleveland!," "Pink Clouding" and "Babylon."
