Burger King listened to its customers and has transformed one of its core menu items, the Whopper.

For the first time in nearly 10 years, the fast food chain says it has updated the recipe and packaging for the fan-favorite flame-grilled burger.

In an announcement Thursday, Burger King boasted "elevated" changes to the Whopper including a premium bun, "freshly cut onions and tomatoes, crisp lettuce, tangy pickles and better tasting mayo."

Burger King has updated the recipe for its famed menu item, the Whopper.

The "higher-quality" Whopper will also be served in a box, Burger King said, "to ensure it makes it to Guests exactly the way it left the kitchen."

The Whopper is still made with more than a quarter-pound of beef and is free of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives, the fast food giant said.

"Over the past several years, we've focused on strengthening our operations and modernizing our restaurants to build a more consistent foundation across the system," Tom Curtis, president of Burger King U.S. & Canada, said in a statement. "With that work well underway, we're now in a position to thoughtfully elevate our core menu."

He added, "The Whopper is an icon, so we didn't set out to reinvent it. Instead, we elevated it based on direct Guest feedback."

Burger King has welcomed direct customer feedback, including a new initiative that launched earlier this month where guests can call or text Curtis to share ideas and request improvements.
