If you've seen the term "dirty soda" bubbling up on social media, you've probably also had to immediately do a Google search for "what is dirty soda?"

The sweet drink made with soda, cream and flavored syrup has reached a level of internet fame as of late where creators have started to concoct their own riffs on the wildly popular TikTok trend.

But the obsession didn't originate on the social media video platform -- it first fizzed up in Utah over a decade ago, Vice reported. After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints eased its restrictions on soda, the state's Mormon majority-population who traditionally avoided beverages with booze or caffeine prompted an influx of shops that would create amped-up versions of soda and label it as "dirty."

More recently, pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo's influence was on full display when a photo snapped of her sipping on the effervescent drink at Utah-based chain Swig in December sparked a new wave of curiosity and interest around dirty soda.

Other iterations of fizzy drinks like Italian soda -- made with carbonated water and flavored syrup -- or cream soda and floats have long been popular options, but the dirty soda is having it's moment.

Check out how Swig makes the popular drink below and hundreds of other examples on TikTok with the hashtag #dirtysoda that's racked up over 1.4 million views.

Get creative and make it at home with your soda and creamer of choice!
