'Disturbing' Video Captures High School Football Players Colliding With Referee
— -- Two high school football players appeared to collide with a referee during a game near San Antonio, Texas, Friday night, in an incident the school district is calling "disturbing."
A player from San Antonio's John Jay High School was caught on video appearing to barrel into a referee on the field. A teammate then appeared to dive on the ref after he fell.
Both players were ejected.
Before the referee was hit, two Jay players had been ejected on separate plays.
The game was against Marble Falls High School in Marble Falls, about 90 miles north of San Antonio. The Jays lost 15-9.
"The video that we saw is extremely disturbing," the Northside Independent School District, which includes John Jay, said in a statement to ABC News. "It is not the good sportsmanlike behavior that we teach students. We are in touch with and cooperating with the UIL [University Interscholastic League] in the investigation."
The school district added, "We will deal with this on Tuesday when schools reopen and schedule a due process hearing. The hearing will include interviews with game officials, coaches as well as students. Northside ISD will not tolerate this kind of behavior. We will have more to say on Tuesday."
The University Interscholastic League said in a statement to ABC News, "The UIL is extremely concerned about the actions portrayed in the football game between Marble Falls and San Antonio Jay. The League is working with the school districts and officials involved to conduct a thorough investigation. The UIL takes this matter very seriously and will take appropriate action once the investigation is complete."
The local referee association deferred comment to the state-wide president, who declined to comment.
