QB Bryce Young sets Alabama Crimson Tide record in debut with 4 passing TDs

Bryce Young's first start as Alabama's quarterback proved historic as he set a school record for passing touchdowns and yards in a debut as a starter in Saturday's 44-13 win over Miami. 

Young, a sophomore, threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 27 of 38 passes with no interceptions.

"It's a blessing, for sure," Young said of joining the Alabama record books. "That's not something I take lightly. There's been a lot of greats that have played here. But really it's a testament to my teammates and the coaching staff. The line did an amazing job."

Young's 94-yard pass to Jameson Williams tied for the second-longest touchdown pass in Alabama history. Coach Nick Saban said he thought Young played well for his first start.

"He did really, really well," Saban said. "He's smart. Most people look at the stats ... but he redirects the protection, plays like a veteran out there."

Saban credited Young's preparation for his poise and command of the offense against Miami.

"He took what the defense gave and directed the offense in a positive way," he said.

But it wasn't all good news for Alabama. Saban said that linebacker Chris Allen sustained a serious foot injury and could be lost for the season. Allen led the SEC in tackles for loss last season with 13, earning All-SEC second-team honors.

"It was a luxury to have him and Will [Anderson] as outside backers," Saban said. "We're confident in Drew [Sanders]. ... Some of the younger guys are going to get an opportunity."

Alabama's defense played well against Miami, limiting the Hurricanes to fewer than 300 total yards while forcing three turnovers. Cameron Latu, a converted linebacker who saw limited action as a tight end last season, led the team with two touchdown receptions.

No. 1 Alabama will host Mercer on Saturday.
