Viral bald eagle Jackie's condition has worsened: Wildlife center
The condition of an injured bald eagle presumed to be Jackie, one half of the viral Big Bear Valley nest cam duo Jackie and Shadow, has worsened, according to the Ojai Raptor Center, which has been treating the bird over the past several weeks.
"Today's bloodwork brought some difficult news," the wildlife rehabilitation center wrote in a Facebook post Monday. "Her packed cell volume (PCV) has dropped to 13%, which means her anemia has worsened since our last update. Our veterinary team is responding quickly."
The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation's San Dimas Raptor Rescue team said it rescued an injured bald eagle in late July following a fight with two other eagles and took the bird to the raptor center, located in Ojai, California.
The bald eagle, officially known as and referred to by the raptor center as patient 26-519, was presumed to be Jackie following an analysis of photos and videos of the bird by Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that operates livestream cameras of Jackie and her partner Shadow and their chicks.
Ojai Raptor Center said it is continuing testing on Jackie to help determine the best course of treatment for her.
"Additional advanced diagnostic testing is now underway, and expedited laboratory testing has been requested as we continue working to better understand her condition and guide the next steps in her treatment," the center continued in its post. "At this stage, we do not have further answers to share, but we promise to keep you informed as soon as we have meaningful new information."
Jackie and Shadow are two of the famous bald eagles that live in Big Bear Valley inside the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California. The two gained viral attention several years back, after livestream nest cameras were installed, allowing viewers across the world to track the eagles' comings and goings.
In 2025, the duo gained further attention after welcoming three chicks, one of which died in a winter storm.
The pair welcomed two more eaglets this past spring.
