14-year-old arrested in parking garage killing
A 14-year-old has been arrested in the death of a 23-year-old killed in an Indianapolis parking garage last month, according to police.
"One young man tragically had his life cut short and another is going to face lifelong consequences for his actions," Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Tanya Terry said at a press conference Thursday.
"We cannot accept violence involving our children as something that’s normal," Terry said.
Officers were near a parking garage in Indianapolis on May 28 when they were notified of a possible gunshot being fired inside the garage, according to the IMPD.
Several officers entered the parking garage and found the victim, later identified as Brett Scrogham, in a vehicle with a gunshot wound, police said.
He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
After reviewing available footage, evidence and speaking to witnesses, detectives identified a suspect in the case, police said.
"While I’m proud to say that our detectives have made an arrest and worked very hard to bring those accountable into custody, I’m frustrated and disheartened to tell you that the person we believe is responsible for this is a 14-year-old child," Terry said.
The suspect was found on Wednesday and taken into custody, police said. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decisions, police said.
"While today's announcement marks an important step forward in this investigation, it cannot heal or ease the pain felt by Mr. Scrogham’s family, friends, and loved ones. This case is a tragic reminder that a single act of violence can alter countless lives in an instant," the chief said in a statement Wednesday.
