Teen suspect arrested after 17-year-old shot dead near Houston high school: Police
A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed down the street from his high school in Houston on Friday morning, and another 17-year-old was arrested in connection with the gunfire, authorities said.
The victim was a senior at Westbury High School, Houston police said at a news conference.
The arrest came after an hourslong search involving nearly 100 law enforcement officers and personnel from multiple agencies, according to Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz, who spoke at a press conference later Friday evening.
Investigators used drones and other surveillance technology to track the suspect to a neighborhood near Hillcroft, where he was arrested on the street near a residence police had been watching, the officials said.
The police chief said the teen suspected in the shooting is believed to have acted alone and is not currently enrolled in the Houston school system.
Police recovered a handgun from the suspect, but investigators had not yet determined whether it was the weapon used in the fatal shooting.
Police said they believe a dispute between the victim and suspect escalated before the suspect pulled out a handgun. Investigators have not determined a motive or whether the victim was specifically targeted.
Police are also working to determine how the two teenagers knew each other.
The victim's family is "devastated," police said earlier.
"A grandmother shouldn't be on the side of the street here, grieving for her child, for her grandchild. The mom is beside herself," police said.
