2 killed, 7 in critical condition in North Carolina mass shooting

At least two people were killed and seven others are in critical condition after a mass shooting early Saturday at a large house party in North Carolina, according to officials. 

A total of 13 people were shot in the incident just outside of Maxton at around 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

Over 150 people ran from the scene of the shooting before law enforcement arrived, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies were responding to the report of a "loud music violation" when they received "multiple calls reporting that individuals had been shot at the location," according to the sheriff's office.

Jessie Locklear Jr., 49, and Nehemiah Locklear, 16, were found dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

Several other victims also arrived at the Scotland Health Care in Laurinburg and UNC Health Southeastern Medical Center in Lumberton. One other victim was later transported to an undisclosed medical facility with life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

Several victims remain hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while others were treated and released.

The surviving victims were between the ages of 17 and 43.

The shooting was an isolated incident and there is no current threat to the community, according to the sheriff’s office.

“This was yet another senseless act of gun violence that has taken the lives of two individuals and left many others seriously injured,” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said in a statement. “What makes this even more disturbing is the involvement of teenagers, alcohol, and guns at a large house party."

"Those responsible for this reckless and heartless act must be held accountable. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this tragic event," Wilkins said.
