25-year-old suspect arrested for beating man to death at NYC subway station: Police
A 25-year-old suspect is now in custody after he admitted to beating a man to death inside a subway station in New York City, according to the New York Police Department.
David Mazariegos was arrested Tuesday night after he allegedly attacked a man at the Jay Street subway station in Brooklyn at approximately 3:07 p.m., police said.
Police arrived at the scene after they received a call of an "aided male" at the station, officials said. Once officers arrived, they "observed an unidentified male, unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma about the body," police said in a statement to ABC News.
Paramedics transported the victim -- who has not been identified -- to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in "critical condition" and was later "pronounced deceased," police said.
Mazariegos admitted to killing the victim as he held open the subway emergency gate "because he didn't like the way he looked at him," officials said.
The suspect allegedly punched, kicked and stomped on the victim's head 15 times during the attack, officials told New York ABC station WABC.
The NYPD posted photos searching for Mazariegos before they were able to arrest him in Times Square.
"Eagle-eyed cops working near Times Square recognized this perp from the photos they had just received and immediately brought this dangerous criminal into custody," Jessica Tisch, police commissioner of the city of New York said in a post on X.
The identity of the victim is "being withheld pending proper family identification," police said.
The suspect is awaiting arraignment in court in Lower Manhattan for two other unrelated crimes. He is charged with criminal possession of a weapon from Tuesday night's arrest, as he had a sword on him at the time of his arrest.
Mazariegos' arraignment will likely be on Thursday, and he will be transported to Brooklyn to face charges after court, officials told WABC.
