— -- Two people accused of robbing a jewelry store were caught mid-getaway after they found themselves trapped in the store elevator.

A man and woman allegedly broke into a jewelry store in Sycamore Township, Ohio, where they took 26 diamond rings Thursday night, according to ABC affiliate WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. The rings were worth a combined $86,000, the station reported.

They tried to flee down the stairs to their car in the basement parking lot, but the stairs only went to the first floor, so the duo took the elevator, where they became trapped, officials told WCPO-TV.

The fire department responded to open the elevator, and authorities arrested the two people inside -- Leroy Bridgman, 57, and Marcie Young, 61, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokesman Michael Robison told WCPO-TV. Jewelry, a ski mask and screw drivers were found in the ceiling of the elevator, he said.

"Sometimes karma makes sure things work out how they should," Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Neil said.

Bridgman and Young were charged with breaking and entering and possessing criminal tools, according to WCPO-TV. Young is also facing drug possession and paraphernalia charges.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment.
