Former President Joe Biden recently had Mohs surgery, according to a Biden spokesperson. Mohs surgery is a common procedure used to treat skin cancer.

According to the Mayo Clinic, "This surgery involves cutting away thin layers of skin. Each thin layer is looked at closely for signs of cancer. The process keeps going until there are no signs of cancer."

Biden was recently spotted around Delaware with a bandage on his head. The Daily Mail reported on footage of Biden leaving a church in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, in which the bandage is visible.

Biden has had previous skin cancer procedures. During his February 2023 physical, he had a lesion removed from his chest that was later confirmed as a basal cell carcinoma. According to his doctor at the time, Dr. Kevin O'Connor, all the cancerous tissue was removed and no further treatment was required. O'Connor said that Biden would "continue dermatologic surveillance as part of his ongoing comprehensive healthcare."

Before entering office, Biden had several non-melanoma skin cancers removed with Mohs surgery.

Former first lady Jill Biden also underwent Mohs surgery to have a skin cancer lesion removed from above her right eye, which had been discovered during a routine skin cancer screening in January of 2023.

Biden's health was most recently in the headlines when his office announced he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in May that had spread to his bones.
