— -- One half of a runaway teen couple accused of a multi-state crime spree refused to stay in the courtroom today after seeing members of the media.

Dalton Hayes arrived in the courtroom during a preliminary hearing on charges stemming from their alleged crime spree. After seeing cameras and members of the media he immediately stood up and tried to leave, as his lawyer tried to talk to him.

"No disrespect to the courtroom, I’m not staying here in here with that media," Hayes told the judge in the Grayson County Courthouse in Grayson County, Kentucky.

Hayes, 18, last week pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary, theft, statutory rape and criminal mischief, according to the Associated Press.

Hayes was allowed to leave the courtroom during the hearing. He will return to court Feb. 5 after undergoing a competency evaluation requested by his attorney.

Hayes was arrested earlier this month after two weeks on the run where he and his underage girlfriend are accused of stealing multiple cars as they traveled across state lines.
