"Crews responded and took appropriate precautions to enter the confined space to perform rescue operations," Beach said in a statement on Thursday. "Unfortunately, District personnel recovered six deceased individuals from the space."

No additional details on the incident were released by the Southeast Weld Fire District.

The dairy farm is located in Keenesburg, in a rural area about 45 miles northeast of Denver.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office said there is not believed to be any criminal element.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said it has opened an investigation into the incident, which will take up to six months to complete. No additional information will be released during that time, it said.

"Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the workers who lost their lives at the dairy farm in Keenesburg, Colorado," an OSHA spokesperson said in a statement.

The Dairy Farmers of America said the "tragic accident" occurred at one of its member farms.

"We are deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts and most sincere condolences go out to the friends and families of the deceased," the organization said in a statement. "At this early stage, we have no further details."
