Extreme heat hitting Northeast, West: Latest on the scorching temperatures

Extreme heat hits both coasts

Extreme heat is hitting both coasts, bringing dangerously high temperatures to the Northeast, Northwest and Southwest.

In the Northeast, heat advisories are in place for parts of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and upstate New York.

Augusta, Maine, hit a daily high temperature of 98 degrees on Monday.

Daily record highs in the mid-90s are possible on Tuesday from Caribou, Maine, to Burlington, Vermont, and Manchester, New Hampshire, to Syracuse, New York.

New England will cool down by Thursday and Friday before another round of above-average heat returns to the Northeast this weekend.

The West is also facing extreme heat.

In the Northwest, Roseburg, Oregon, hit a daily high temperature of 105 degrees on Monday.

On Tuesday, a record high temperature is possible in Medford, Oregon, and Portland is forecast to reach between 97 and 105 degrees.

In the Southwest, Las Vegas could reach 110 degrees and a record high temperature is possible in Reno, Nevada, on Tuesday.

Death Valley, California, could near 121 degrees on Tuesday while Phoenix could hit a scorching 112 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This large area of excessive heat in the West will then make its way east, bringing highs in the mid-90s to Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday, and then reaching the Northeast over the weekend.
