— -- A police sergeant in Georgia managed to save two lives during one shift.

Sgt. Nathan Ernst of the Holly Springs Police Department -- about 30 miles north of Atlanta -- has worked in law enforcement for over a decade, said Public Information Officer Sherry Conrad.

"He's an incredible individual," Conrad added. "He is very diligent in what he does."

Here is how the experienced sergeant spent Saturday night, according to the Holly Springs Police Department:

Saturday at 6:30 p.m.:

Ernst's night shift begins.

Saturday at about 8:50 p.m.:

Ernst responded to a report of an unconscious man and found a 24-year-old who had used heroin. Ernst immediately administered NarCan -- which helps reverse the effects of the drug -- and the man regained consciousness at the scene. The victim was then taken to a hospital.

Saturday at about 10:53 p.m.:

Ernst responded to a fire report and found a handicapped woman trapped in a hospital bed. The door and roof were engulfed in flames, but Ernst and another officer carried the woman to safety.

Sunday at 6:30 a.m.:

Ernst's night shift ends.

According to Conrad, a night like this "is extremely rare." But Conrad said "there's a reason he's a sergeant."

"It's because he's a great leader, he leads by example," she said. "He will go out with officers and he will answer calls when officers are busy with other calls... He's a role model for what a sergeant should be."
