Hillary Clinton Clobbers Donald Trump in Fundraising, Reports Show
— -- Donald Trump was dominated in fundraising by opponent Hillary Clinton last month as he kicked off his general election campaign.
Financial disclosure documents show Hillary Clinton raised $19.7 million in May, although her campaign said she raised millions more through a joint effort with the Democratic National Committee — a separate venture that was not required to disclose its May totals by the same deadline. Clinton has $42 million in cash on hand.
Trump's fundraising efforts brought in $3.1 million in May, according to new financial disclosure reports, and the candidate lent his campaign $2.2 million. His campaign has about $1.3 million in cash on hand.
The Republican National Committee took in about $13 million last month, on par with what it raised in April, before the Republican Party had a presumptive nominee.
After presumably securing the nomination in May, Trump began to set up a fundraising operation, announcing a finance chief and two joint fundraising efforts with the RNC. The latest figures don't reflect more recent efforts, such as events in Texas co-hosted by Trump and the RNC at which he claimed last week to have raised $12 million to $13 million in two days. No official data have been released confirming those totals.
Official numbers show Trump lagging significantly both Clinton and his recent GOP predecessors. In May 2012, Mitt Romney raised $23.4 million. In 2008, John McCain raised $21.5 million that month.
Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and John Kasich, all of whom have suspended their presidential campaigns, had more cash on hand than Trump did at the close of this reporting period.
