— -- A Houston woman who was shot in the head in a road rage incident says she’s thankful to be alive -- and she has a message for the unknown gunman.

Kay Hafford, 28, speaking exclusively to ABC station KTRK-TV, said she’s still confused by the Friday incident.

“I’m trying to figure out: Was he mad before?” Hafford said. "What did I do that honking at him for you cutting me off-- I mean, his target was to kill me, I believe."

The shooting happened during Friday morning’s rush hour, when she was merging onto Interstate 45 north of Houston. Hafford says she honked at the driver of a white Chevy Tahoe. The man started taunting her, she said -- pulling up right next to her and firing a single shot through the passenger side window.

“I sped up, he sped up and then maybe about 30 seconds later, there was a big boom noise,” Hafford said.

Bullet fragments hit Hafford’s head and neck, but she somehow managed to call 911. She was treated at Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute before being discharged Sunday.

Hafford has spent the past few days recovering at home with the help of her husband, Kendrick. As her recovery continues, Hafford has found inspiration amid her struggles.

“I’m living here to tell people that I survived, and I’m sure it’s probably killing him that I’m still alive,” Hafford said. "That’s enough for me, for him to have that anxiety that it didn’t work."
