Possible human remains have been discovered on Lake Powell in Utah by a group on a houseboat, officials said.

On Friday, August 14, Kane County Sheriff’s Dispatch was notified about possible human remains located in Kane County on Lake Powell, according to a statement from the Kane County Sheriff's Office. Lake Powell is located primarily in southern Utah, with a small portion in northern Arizona.

“Investigators from Kane County Sheriff's Office responded with National Park Service rangers and collected the remains,” authorities said.

The remains were taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and possible identification, Kane County officials confirmed.

“The case is still under investigation in hopes of finding the identification of the person to provide closure to the family,” authorities said.

In July, the combined water of Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the country's two biggest reservoirs, fell to their lowest levels since 1957. The unprecedented low in combined storage prompted the U.S. Department of the Interior to mandate twenty percent cuts in water usage for the next two years for Arizona, California and Nevada.

This discovery comes as another possible set of human remains was discovered on August 16 at Lake Mead, outside Las Vegas.

Lake Mead is the largest man-made reservoir in the country, and this month its water level hit an all-time low because of climate change and drought conditions.

As Lake Mead has dried up in recent years, it has revealed a number of sets of human remains, including a body in a barrel that many believe could be a decades-old victim of a Las Vegas mob hit.

ABC News has chronicled the secrets of Lake Mead over the years and featured the mystery of the body in the barrel in a 2023 episode of “20/20.”

The investigation into the discovery at Lake Powell is currently ongoing.
