Jeb Bush Says He 'Just Can't' Throw George W. Bush 'Under the Bus'
— -- Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush, who officially launched his White House bid on Monday, acknowledged today he may have trouble criticizing his brother -- former President George W. Bush -- on the campaign trail.
“When you love someone as your brother or your dad, it's not easy for me to say, just kinda throw them under the bus to make myself look better,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with ABC “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir. “I just can't do it.”
“There's a real fascination about where I'm different, where I'm the same. It's the human interest side of this, and I respect that,” he said while campaigning in Iowa. “For me to be successful, this has to be about my ideas and about my life experience and about the future.”
Bush also told Muir he isn’t sure whether his brother will join him on the trail.
“I don't know, I don't know yet, we just started,” Bush said. “I'm George's brother, I love him.”
He added that his brother has “been helpful” to his campaign already.
The newly-declared presidential candidate also said he understands the concern of some voters -- famously articulated by his mother, former First Lady Barbara Bush -- that there have been “enough Bushes” in the White House.
He said the dynasty issue is “an opportunity as much as it is a challenge.”
“I totally get it,” he told Muir. “But I have a record of accomplishment and the leadership skills to move this country forward.”
“If I'm successful in sharing that experience and the vision for the future, I'll win,” he added. “If it's all about this, you know, I'm going to have a hard time.”
