A record-breaking 45 million Americans are expected to travel for Memorial Day weekend, but much of the U.S. won't be seeing beach-friendly weather.

Here's what you need to know about the holiday weekend weather forecast:

Northeast

Friday will be mostly cloudy for the Northeast with temperatures 5-to-10 degrees below average for late-May.

Heavy rain is forecast for Saturday and then scattered showers are possible on Sunday and Monday.

South

Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected across the South.

States from Texas to Tennessee to Mississippi could see 3 to 6 inches of rain through Tuesday.

While this won't help vacationers looking to soak up the sun, the rain is much needed for the region. The South's worsening drought has led to a large uptick in wildfire activity in the area this year.

The only part of the South that may dodge the bulk of the rain is Florida. The Sunshine State could see scattered daytime showers and storms, but it won't be a washout.

Midwest

The Midwest will see some scattered rain on Friday. The rain may linger into Saturday, but it won't be a washout for either day.

Sunday could bring some lingering showers for the Great Lakes. By Monday, the region will be mostly dry.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 60s and 70s on Friday and Saturday and then warm up to the 70s and 80s by Monday.

West

Meanwhile, those in the West can enjoy the coveted pool and beach weather, as it'll be mostly dry and warm over the holiday weekend.

In the Southwest, temperatures could climb into the 90s and may even hit triple digits.
