LONDON -- A car bomb killed a Russian general in Moscow early on Monday morning, the Investigative Committee of Russia said in a statement.

Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov was the head of the operational Training Department of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, the committee said. He was killed when "an explosive device installed under the bottom of a car was detonated on Yaseneva Street in Moscow."

A criminal case has been opened into the incident, the statement said. Among the theories being pursued is "related to the organization of the crime by the Ukrainian special services," the committee said.

The committee published a video from the scene of the explosion, which showed a visibly damaged white car in what appeared to be a residential area.

Sarvarov is the third high-ranking military figure killed since late last year.

In December 2024, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov -- the head of Russia's Radiological, Chemical and Biological Protection Forces -- was killed in an explosion along with his assistant as they were leaving a residential building in Moscow.

The explosive device that killed Kirillov was planted on an electric scooter that was left close to the building, investigators said.

And in April, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik was killed by a car bomb in an eastern suburb of the capital.
