— -- A high school football player from Warren County, New Jersey, died Friday night after he was injured on the field, the school district superintendent said.

"Last night we experienced a tragedy in the loss of student athlete Evan Murray following an injury during the Summit-Warren Hills football game," a statement on the Warren Hills Regional School District website from Interim Superintendent Gary Bowen said.

"We are deeply saddened and sincerely appreciate the support and caring of our close-knit greater Warren Hills community," Bowen added.

The statement did not elaborate on how Murray died.

In an additional statement Bowen provided to ABC News, he said, "I offer my sincere condolences to the Murray family. The greater Warren Hills community is a close-knit group of fine, caring people."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie expressed his condolences to Murray's family.

Warren Hills coach Larry Dubiel told Lehigh Valley Live that officials were still trying to determine what happened.

"We lost a fine kid," he said.

The district said grief and crisis counseling would be available Saturday and Sunday.

The Warren County Prosecutor's Office, which police said was investigating the incident, and officials from Warren Hills Regional High School could not be immediately reached for comment.
