— -- An NYPD officer has died after being shot in East Harlem Tuesday night responding to a report of a shooting, authorities said at a press conference.

Officials said that the five-year-veteran housing officer -- identified as Randolph Holder, 33, a native of Guyana -- was responding to a report of a shooting near 102nd Street.

After that he approached a group near a footbridge on the FDR Drive and a chase followed. One of the members of the group was on a bicycle.

Near 120th Street the officer was shot in the forehead.

Another gunshot victim, believe to be the suspect, was discovered at 125th Street. The person was taken with a leg wound to New York Hospital.

A weapon and the bicycle were recovered.

The officer was rushed to Harlem Hospital in critical condition but later died.

Holder was not married. His father and grandfather were both police officers in Guyana, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said.

"When the call comes, he ran to a danger. It was the last time he will respond to that call," Bratton said at a press conference.

"Our hearts are heavy, and we offer our thoughts and prayers to his family," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
