June 3, 2014— -- New York City subway travelers were forced to cover their faces Monday night after a fire broke out in the tunnel, sending smoke billowing into subway cars.

The fire started at about 11 p.m. along the tracks for the No. 7 train, which runs between Queens and Manhattan, FDNY officials said.

Passengers were trapped. Some of them covered their faces, trying to avoid inhaling the smoke after train stopped.

The fire was extinguished by 12:20 a.m., but it snarled No. 7 train service for hours, forcing passengers to make alternate travel plans.
