Possibly armed woman wanted in Massachusetts in connection with off-duty officer death
A woman who has helped to provide mental health support for first responders is wanted by authorities in connection with a fatal domestic incident on Tuesday of an off-duty Worcester, Massachusetts, police officer.
Worcester Police have been looking for Karen Solomon, 58, since Tuesday morning after they discovered Kurt Solomon, 57, dead inside a house.
The Worcester Police Department declined to provide more details about the relationship between the two.
Karen Solomon is believed to have been "armed and dangerous," according to Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier and Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early.
"In regards to this case, we want her for questioning. She was at the house. We'd be able to ask her [questions] with regards as to what happened at the house," Early told reporters at a news conference Tuesday.
Karen Solomon is the founder of First HELP, a first responder suicide prevention non-profit. The group helps officers dealing with mental health situations and raises awareness for suicide prevention for first responders and their families.
Following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, Karen Solomon spoke with ABC News about first responder suicides.
"What brought the officer to the point of suicide, and why couldn't that officer get help? And once we can answer those two questions, we can assign it a line of duty death designation," Solomon told ABC News in the March 2021 story.
The DA said other people were at the house during the incident, but wouldn't give further details as the investigation is ongoing.
Investigators, including the U.S. Marshals, searched the area for Karen Solomon Tuesday and Wednesday. They used helicopters, canines and boats to comb the surrounding neighborhoods, but she remained at large as of Wednesday morning, police said.
On Wednesday, the police released surveillance footage of Karen Solomon after the incident.
Kurt Solomon had been on the force for 31 years and had two sons, Thomas Duffy, the president of the Worcester Patrolmen Union, told reporters.
"It was an honor to work with him. He was a tremendous person and a tremendous police officer," he said.
