Twenty years after Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of the Gulf Coast, "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts is returning to the region to document its recovery after the storm.

In her new special, "Hurricane Katrina: 20 Years After the Storm with Robin Roberts," Roberts, a Gulf Coast native, will look at how Katrina has shaped the region and how the local communities -- including her hometown of Pass Christian, Mississippi -- have come together to rebuild.

The special will air Friday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. ET, on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu and Disney+ for bundle subscribers, Roberts announced Tuesday on "GMA."

"It is hard to believe it's been 20 years," Roberts said on "GMA" while reflecting on the "damage and heartache" the region suffered.

It was on Aug. 29, 2005, that Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast as a Category 3 hurricane, becoming one of the five deadliest hurricanes in United States history and causing over $100 billion in damage, according to the National Weather Service.
