Thune says McConnell is 'dialed in' after Sunday hospitalization
Majority Leader John Thune said Monday he has spoken with Sen. Mitch McConnell after his Sunday hospitalization.
"He sounded good. He wants to be back," Thune said.
In a statement issued just after Thune spoke, McConnell's office said the senator was "fully engaged with staff."
“Senator McConnell is fully engaged with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters and is very appreciative of the outstanding care he is receiving," a spokesperson for McConnell said in a statement.
Thune deferred to McConnell's staff about when McConnell will return to Capitol Hill.
"He is clearly dialed in to what's going on. He's following along with stuff we are doing this week up here. Very much so," Thune said.
ABC News has inquired, but McConnell's office has not provided any additional information about McConnell's diagnosis or status beyond the statement it issued Sunday confirming his hospitalization and the statement they issued Monday evening.
Republican Whip John Barrasso also said he spoke to McConnell Monday, a spokesperson for Barrasso confirmed. Barrasso said McConnell was "engaged" and eager to return to the Hill.
This is the latest in a string of medical incidents that the 84-year-old senator has faced in recent years.
McConnell is set to retire at the end of his term in January.
