How a son turned against his mother after she was convicted in his stepdad's murder
More than six years after Indiana firefighter Robbie Doerr was gunned down in his driveway, his stepson Nathaniel Guthrie spoke out in an exclusive new interview with "20/20."
Guthrie is the biological son of Doerr's wife, Becky Fox-Doerr, who was ultimately sentenced to prison for Doerr's murder. He recalled the devastating moment when he arrived to the scene of the crime in Evansville.
"The whole house was swarming with police officers and other people that had been notified. It was traumatic," Guthrie said.

Doerr, 51, had just pulled into his home on the night of Feb. 26, 2019, when he was shot multiple times. It happened after he picked up an extra firefighting shift.
"28 years he was on the force," Guthrie said about his stepfather. "His dad was a fireman, so it was a family tradition."
Upon hearing the gunshots from their kitchen, Doerr's wife, Becky Fox-Doerr, called 911.
Doerr's daughter, Lindsey Griffin, described her heartbreak over her father's death in an interview with "20/20."
"He was my best friend. All I could think about was I needed to be next to my dad. Like my dad was alone on that concrete," Griffin said. "He didn't have me. I needed to be with him."
Fox-Doerr had been married five times before wedding Doerr, and the couple had been married for only six months before he was shot.
Authorities investigating the crime discovered that Fox-Doerr had spoken to someone and deleted the record off her phone minutes before she called 911.
After initially denying the claim, Fox-Doerr admitted the caller was Larry Richmond Sr., her sister's fiancé. She told police she often deleted call records to free up storage space on her phone.
Larry Richmond Sr. had previously plead guilty to killing a man in 1996 and was out on probation after being incarcerated for more than two decades.
According to authorities, Richmond Sr. was unfaithful in his engagement to Fox-Doerr's sister, Mandy Fox-Fillmore. They said he was connected to several women romantically -- including Fox-Doerr.
Larry Richmond Sr.'s son, Larry Richmond Jr., testified that he asked his father if he had slept with his fiancée's sister.
Richmond Jr. recounted how Richmond Sr. responded in the affirmative, saying, "Man, I had to."
Both Fox-Doerr and Richmond Sr. deny they were having an affair.
Authorities also began to believe that Fox-Doerr and Richmond Sr. were after Doerr's life insurance benefits, as Fox-Doerr appeared at his firehouse the day after his murder and asked about his pension, according to authorities.
Prosecutors argued at trial that Fox-Doerr was motivated by the prospect of collecting her husband's firefighter pension and other benefits. It turned out that Doerr's daughter was sole beneficiary, so defense attorneys claimed she "had no financial interest" in his death.
Richmond Sr. and Fox-Doerr were charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder in 2022. They both pleaded not guilty.
The duo were convicted on both charges. Becky Fox-Doerr was sentenced to 90 years behind bars, while Richmond Sr. was sentenced to life in prison.
Denise Turner, Richmond Sr.'s defense attorney, maintained his innocence in an interview with "20/20."
"Larry was never at the Fox-Doerrs' house during the time of the shooting," Turner said. "He's at his mom's house, the entire time."
Becky Fox-Doerr attempted to appeal her conviction in 2025 but was denied.
Despite his prison term and alleged affair with her sister, Fox-Fillmore said she still remains engaged to Richmond Sr.
Fox-Fillmore told "20/20" that she needs his emotional support.
"He wants to talk to me in the morning. He wants me to tell him when I'm home safe from work. He has begged me not to leave him. He says he needs me, and I want to be loved and wanted and needed and all the things," she told ABC News correspondent John Quiñones in a new interview.
Guthrie, Doerr's stepson, who testified at trial against his mother, noted that he felt relief when Fox-Doerr and Richmond Sr. were convicted.
"The next time that she is going to be a part of the free world, will be in a funeral, in a graveyard, somewhere," he told "20/20."
Guthrie noted that he doesn’t have any communication with his mother. Instead, he said he tries to honor his father's memory every day.
"When little boys dream of or talk about their hero, sometimes they say Spider-Man. Mine was a true hero, he was a fireman. He was my dad," he said.
