1 person killed, another injured, in separate shootings at South Carolina State University
Two separate shootings on the campus of South Carolina State University on Saturday night left a woman dead and a man wounded, and prompted school officials to cancel a homecoming weekend concert and temporarily put students on lockdown, authorities said.
Police at the school in Orangeburg said one of the shootings unfolded at a student housing complex.
Few details about both shootings have been released, and police have not announced whether any suspects have been arrested.
The identity of the woman who was shot to death on campus is being withheld by police pending an autopsy and notification of her relatives, authorities said.
The man who was injured in the second shooting on the campus was being treated at a hospital on Sunday afternoon. His name and condition were not immediately released by police.
The shootings at this time are not believed to be connected, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), which is leading the investigations into both shootings.
Authorities asked that anyone with information about the shooting call SLED investigators immediately.
In the notice released Saturday night, the university said the campus was placed on lockdown following "shots fired at Hugine Suites."
The university advised students in the Hugine Suites dorm to remain in their rooms, and others should stay away from the area of the Hugine Suites and return to their own residence halls. Others were asked to leave the campus.
The university said a homecoming concert scheduled for Saturday night was canceled.
South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott said in a statement on X, "My office is closely monitoring the situation at South Carolina State University. Praying for everyone’s safety on campus."
The university has a student population of about 2,900 students.
