— -- A grand jury has handed up a 20-count indictment against the man accused of killing three members of a prominent family and their housekeeper in their Washington mansion last year.

An indictment was returned today charging Darron Wint, also known as Daron, with a total of 20 felony charges, including 12 counts of first-degree murder while armed, according to prosecutors.

Savvas Savopoulos, 46; Amy Savopoulos, 47; their son Philip Savopoulos, 10; and housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, 57, were killed in the May 2015 murders, which the indictment describes as "especially heinous, atrocious, and cruel."

According to the indictment, Wint essentially kidnapped all four victims before killing them. Wint also allegedly extorted $40,000 and set fire to the house.

Authorities discovered the bodies inside when fire crews responded to the burning house.

If he is convicted on the murder charges against him, Wint could face life in prison for each of the charges.

Wint was arrested little more than a week after the murders, held since then on one charge of first-degree murder.

He is set to be arraigned Friday on the indictment, as authorities say the investigation into the murders continues. Since the case first gained national prominence, authorities have said they are trying to determine who else may have been involved in the murders.

A former lawyer for Wint said his client “never intended or wanted anybody ... to be harmed.”
