Texas Cop's Matthew McConaughey Lincoln Ad Parody Shows Softer Side of Cops
— -- Hollywood might want to keep tabs on this Cedar Hill, Texas, cop! Sgt. Larry Wise's parody of Matthew McConaughey's first Lincoln MKC commercial is going viral and getting rave reviews, according to comments on YouTube and Facebook.
In the original Lincoln commercial, which has over 2 million views on YouTube, McConaughey's brooding voice is dubbed over footage of him driving a Lincoln MKC on a dark road. The narration is vague and mysterious, and some users believe it's related to his role in "Interstellar."
"Sometimes, you've got to go back to actually move forward," McConaughey begins. "And I don’t mean going back to reminisce or chase ghosts. I mean going back to see where you came from. Where you been. How you got here. See where you’re going."
Wise's version begins similarly with the cop in a car, though this time it's a Ford Explorer police car instead of a Lincoln MKC.
Wise's longer narration starts exactly the same as McConaughey's -- down to McConaughey's accent. But Wise's monologue hilariously diverges when he starts contemplating about why he went into police work.
You "don’t get into police work cause it makes sense," he says. "You do it 'cause you thought it looked really cool on T.V. or 'cause med school was outta the question."
"I like being in here, driving around all night long contemplating the important questions in life," Wise continues, while copying McConaughey's facial expression and finger rubbing. "Who am I? Why am I still on duty? Is the officer assigned to this squad looking for me right now? What is this on my finger and why won’t it come off? Is it mystery pocket goo from that last guy I searched?
The video ends with a police officer playing an arrested suspect in the backseat popping out and interrupting Wise's inner reflection.
Cedar Hill Lt. Colin Chenauat told ABC News today he and Wise got together to make the video two weeks ago for an awards banquet to show something different from other videos they've previously done.
"I saw Jim Carrey's spoof on 'SNL,' and I thought it would be cool to do that and put it to police language," Chenauat said. "So I asked Wise, 'Can you do a Matthew McConaughey voice?'"
After writing the script together, the two filmed and edited the video in the course of one night, and there were a lot of takes because the officers were laughing so much, he said.
"Humor is a tool for us to grow relationships with our community," Chenauat said. "That's why we put it up on our social media. Humor is a tool for us to help us reach more folks and see we’re good people -- we’re moms and dads, we listen to same music, we do a lot of the same things you do."
And stay tuned. The Cedar Hill Police Department plans on doing more videos after being thrilled with the success of this one, Chenauat added.
"We're hope the video sends the message most police officers are pretty good people in light of all the negative things going on in the news right now," he said.
