Thousands Line Up For the New iPad As It Hits Stores

ByJOANNA STERN
March 16, 2012, 12:34 PM

March 16, 2012— -- After months of anticipation, Apple's new iPad arrived in stores today. Apple Stores and other retailers opened at 8 a.m. local time to start selling the tablets to the waiting crowds.

Those who pre-ordered the new iPad will start receiving the tablet in the mail today. There's a two to three week wait time for those who order the new iPad on Apple's site.

Thousands of people waited in line at Apple Stores around the country this morning. In New York, the line wrapped around the block at Apple's 5th Avenue Store. Similar lines have formed around the country. A woman in that very line in New York, hoped to cash out on her third spot in line. She received an offer of $1,000 for the place.

And as he usually does, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, has been sitting on line at Apple's Los Angeles Store in California since yesterday.

Apple hasn't reported sales numbers yet, but it has told ABC News that demand has been "off the charts." Yesterday, Apple's briefly stock hit $600 for the first time.

The new iPad has a higher resolution Retina Display, new iSight 5-megapixel camera, a faster processor, and LTE connection options from AT&T and Verizon. The 16GB model starts at $499. The iPad 2 is still available and now costs $399.
