Tom Cruise Reveals Why He 'Invented' Quick International Press Tour

ByMICHAEL ROTHMAN
June 05, 2014, 6:43 PM

June 5, 2014— -- Tom Cruise is not just an iconic actor, but apparently an innovator as well.

The "Edge of Tomorrow" actor, 51, told Jimmy Kimmel that before his legendary hit "Top Gun," Cruise and other A-list actors would tour the world for months promoting a film.

"Yeah, it was amazing," he said Wednesday night. "We traveled all over the world: Italy, Paris, Japan. I always wanted to travel and it was amazing. At the beginning, it took four months, this tour. We used to do these foreign tours and it would take months. You'd spend weeks in one place."

During the promotion for "Top Gun," Cruise was just hitting his stride and had "The Color of Money" and "Rain Man" in the works and wanted to get back to those projects, not travel, even though he loved it.

"I thought, 'I want to make movies,'" he said.

Cruise said he came up with the idea of having premieres in different cities all around the world in a much shorter time span.

"That's when I kind of came up with the idea of doing like, a country, and I thought we'd do a country in a couple of days," he said. "I like premieres. When I saw the old photos of the Grauman's Chinese [Theatre] and those wonderful premieres. I came up with the idea of, ‘Let's have premieres in different countries, and then kind of do it that way.’"

He continued, "Yeah, I came up with that. It took me a few years to get it going."

Kimmel joked right back: "So, all these other actors must want to kill you.”
