Leehlah Alcorn: Transgender Teen's Death Inspires #RealLiveTransAdult Hashtag
— -- The heartbreaking note reportedly left by transgender teen Leelah Alcorn has inspired a Twitter hashtag aimed at other troubled young transgender people.
Transgender adults have started using the hashtag #RealLiveTransAdult to give teens hope that they can grow up and have a successful and happy life as a transgender person.
In a possible suicide note reportedly left by Alcorn, the teenager recounted her difficulty growing up transgender and her despair when her parents allegedly did not let her start to transition before turning 18.
"I’m never going to be happy," the note posted on her Tumblr reads. "Either I live the rest of my life as a lonely man who wishes he were a woman or I live my life as a lonelier woman who hates herself."
Alcorn died on Sunday after being hit by a semi-truck near her home of Kings Mill, Ohio. Ohio Highway Police are investigating the death as a suicide.
After Alcorn's note went viral, numerous transgender adults started to tweet words of inspiration to others who might be struggling.
Most posted about how their lives were complete even as they live as transgender adults.
Other's posted that they didn't transition till they were older, but are still far happier as transgender adults.
Twitter wasn't the only place that people showed support.
An online petition that the teen's chosen name of "Leelah" be on her headstone instead of "Joshua" has already gained nearly 30,000 supporters in just 24 hours.This week a candlelight vigil is being planned in Alcorn's honor at a high school in her hometown of Kings Mill, Ohio.
