Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow region kills 5, governor says
At least five people were killed by a Ukrainian drone attack on an industrial area in the Moscow region overnight, regional governor Andrey Vorobyov said in a post to Telegram on Tuesday, in what appeared to be the deadliest such attack on the capital region since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
At least 10 people were also injured in the attack, Vorobyov said, which occurred in the Chekhov district to the south of the capital. The impact set several fires in an industrial zone, Vorobyov wrote, with damage also done to an administrative building and an electrical substation.
Vorobyov also reported damage to a home and a vehicle in the village of Solnyshkovo.
"The military continues to repel the attack. Drones have been detected over the Moscow region in the Volokolamsk, Klin, Chekhov and Serebryanye Prudy districts," the governor wrote.
Russia's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that it downed at least 320 Ukrainian drones overnight, including over the Moscow and Leningrad regions.
Leningrad governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said in posts to Telegram that at least 17 Ukrainian drones were shot down over his region. "Damage has been recorded in the warehouse area of Krasny Bor," Drozdenko said, noting that a facility of one of Russia's largest online retailers, Wildberries, was among those damaged.
Another Wildberries facility was also attacked in the Tver region, to the northwest of Moscow, regional governor Vitaly Korolev said in posts to Telegram.
Recent Ukrainian drone strikes have been targeting the nationwide storage and transport network of Wildberries, which Kyiv says facilitates the sale of military equipment -- including drones -- to Russian soldiers.
Ukraine has also been expanding its drone strikes into Russia -- referred to by officials in Kyiv as "long-range sanctions" -- more broadly in recent months, often targeting key oil processing infrastructure.
In July, for example, Russia's Defense Ministry said it downed at least 13,312 Ukrainian drones -- a record monthly total -- according to its after-action reports posted to Telegram and analyzed by ABC News.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has defended the expanding attacks, vowing to "bring war back to Russia."
The deaths in the Moscow region came soon after at least seven people were killed when a Ukrainian drone exploded on a beach in southern Russia on Monday.
Krasnodar region governor Veniamin Kondratyev accused Kyiv of "a deliberate strike on civilians."
But Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Counter-Disinformation Center operating as part of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said in a post to Telegram that Russian air defenses were at fault for shooting down the craft and failing to adequately warn those in the area.
Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 136 drones and one ballistic missile into the country overnight into Tuesday morning, of which 117 drones were intercepted or otherwise suppressed. The ballistic missile and 14 drones impacted across 14 locations, the air force said in a post to Telegram.
Ukraine's State Emergency Service said that one woman was killed and two girls injured in a Russian strike on the southern port city of Mykolaiv overnight.
Another woman and two more girls were killed and four other people wounded in a strike on a residential area in the northeastern city of Sumy, the service said, while two other people were injured in the city of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, the service said.
