Job First, Then Marriage, Says 5-Year-Old
March 3, 2011— -- A 5-year-old girl has become a viral Internet sensation after declaring in a precocious YouTube clip that she doesn't "want to marry someone if I don't have a job first."
As American culture becomes obsessed with saying "Yes to the dress" this independent child, whose name has not been disclosed, is more concerned about working first.
How did she become so preoccupied with working? That's unclear. But, it's unlikely that the child learned her lesson from an episode of "30 Rock " or from the playbook of "Desperate Housewives." The online biography of the girl's musically inclined sister states that they do not watch cable television and their entertainment is "limited."
With a sister that has been writing since her age was a single digit, it's not surprising that this young child is thinking about the future. "If a man comes asking me…running out..no, I don't want to marry you yet," the child clearly states on the Youtube video posted by sister Anna Graceman. "I want to have a job," she proclaims in the video.
Attempts to interview the girl weren't immediately successful.
And if he says "I will not come back to you. Fine, I will find a different man," she states matter-of-factly. These are the thoughts of a 5-year-old unconcerned with the marriage statistics that may cause some women to settle.
"I'm not going to do anything for you until I have my job," says the headstrong little girl. "I don't care if I marry you, I don't care if I marry another man." She really, really, wants a job first.
The young child's video has been shared with more than 4 million YouTube viewers. The video was recorded after her singer-songwriter sister appeared on national television program a little more than a year ago.
"My little 5-year-old sister (she's six now) was upset and feeling left out because her big sister was doing all these fun and interesting things, " wrote Anna Graceman.
The 46-second clip is a snippet of a 15-minute video where the 5-year old talks about "her views on life and decides she isn't going to let anything come between her and her goals," according to Graceman.
From the mouths of babies: "I care if I do something that's special. I don't want to marry someone if I don't have a job first!"
