Afraid to wear low-rise jeans? Here's what stylists want you to know
Low-rise jeans are making a comeback, and this time around, the trend is less about shock value and more about comfort, body proportions and personal flare.
Fueled by the continuous wave of Y2K nostalgia, fashion fans are have been revisiting the lower rise silhouettes that dominated the late '90s and early 2000s, while styling them in a more wearable, modern way.
"Good Morning America" spoke to a personal stylist to get all the tips and tricks on how to think about styling low-rise denim if you're ready to give it a try -- or jump back in.
"People are either really loving it or really hating it," personal stylist and style coach Samantha Dawn said. "A lot of the people embracing low-rise denim are drawn to that '90s and Y2K aesthetic, but for others, it's simply about comfort. Some people don't love the feeling of high-rise jeans pressing against their midsection and find low-rise styles more breathable and easy to wear."
How to style low-rise denim
Dawn notes that low-rise denim can create a different visual proportion than high-rise silhouettes.
"Low-rise jeans elongate the torso, while high-rise styles can visually shorten it," she explained. "That elongated look is becoming more popular again, especially as we're seeing drop waist dresses and lower rise silhouettes trending across fashion."
If you're like us and potentially hesitant about fully embracing the trend, Dawn suggests meeting in the middle with mid-rise denim or pairing low-rise jeans with asymmetrical tops for more coverage and balance.
"You don't have to style them with a crop top," she said. "An asymmetrical hem still creates waist definition while making the look feel modern and approachable."
