1. Drink more water

"Water is not only great to help with your energy level and mental clarity, but also keeps your skin hydrated and flushes out toxins that can lead to skin that is dull, lackluster and dry," said Dr. Rachel Maiman, a board-certified dermatologist at Marmur Medical in New York City. "Generally speaking, you should try to drink about 5 to 8 glasses of water every day."

2. Go glycolic for exfoliation AND collagen stimulation

Dr. Whitney Bowe told us, "Glycolic acid molecules don’t just act as exfoliants. With consistent use, these molecules are small enough to dive deep into the skin to stimulate our body’s natural collagen production, firming skin and smoothing lines over time."

3. Don’t neglect your neck, chest and hands

"These areas are often the first to show signs of aging, so treat them just as you would your face," Maiman said. "This means extending your moisturizers, serums, and (yes) sunscreen to these areas. If you want to go the extra mile, purchase a retinol-containing product created for the neck, specifically. I love Skinceuticals Tripeptide-R Neck Repair, which contains 0.2% retinol and a 2.5% tripeptide concentrate to help minimize the appearance of horizontal necklines and wrinkles, loss of firmness and uneven skin tone."

4. Commit to wearing SPF every morning, rain or shine, winter or summer

"Wearing sunscreen every day is not only important for preventing skin cancer -- it also combats signs of premature aging and so is the best resolution to keep you looking younger than your year's long term," Maiman said. "It's important to note that the standard window class allows UVA rays to pass through, hence why you are not protected when indoors. Make sure you choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 minimum."

She continued, "My favorite sheer mineral sunscreen is Supergoop! Mineral Sheerscreen. One of my favorite tinted sunscreens and a truly great hybrid between foundation and sunscreen is the It Cosmetics CC+ Cream with SPF 50+, which has amazingly buildable coverage."

5. Incorporate retinol

"Retinoids, whether they are over-the-counter retinol or prescription-strength retinoids, are quite possibly the most effective ingredient in terms of smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles," Bowe said. "If you’ve been nervous about starting a retinoid, 2022 is the year to level up your skin care game and GO FOR IT."

Maiman added, "Retinol is a holy grail ingredient for everything from anti-aging to acne prevention and pigment reduction. Aside from sunscreen, most derms agree it is the No. 1 ingredient to implement into a skincare routine because of its plethora of cosmetic benefits. If you're new to retinol, consider an over-the-counter formulation first, before graduating to prescription-strength via your dermatologist."

6. Use an antioxidant serums

"Most people think of vitamin C in terms of immune health, but when I think of vitamin C, I think about healthy collagen," Bowe said. "Your skin actually requires vitamin C in order to synthesize collagen. Your body doesn’t store vitamin C, so you need to make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C in your diet every single day. If you take a supplement, more is not better -- 60mg/day is plenty and you should be getting the rest from your diet."

Maiman added, "Nothing will kick your skin's glow and repair mechanisms into overdrive quite like products containing antioxidants, which work to neutralize free radicals, stimulate collagen production, and fade pigmentation. Vitamin C is a great choice, though many others exist, too, from niacinamide to resveratrol."
