Delta Air Lines is the latest major carrier to increase checked bag fees amid high jet fuel prices.

Starting Wednesday, Delta will raise its fee on checked bags by $10, the Atlanta-based airline confirmed to ABC News in a statement.

The increased fee will apply to tickets purchased on or after April 8 for domestic and select short-haul international routes, but will not apply for long-haul international trips, according to Delta.

The price of a first checked bag will increase to $45, the second to $55, and a third checked bag will cost as much as $200.

The move follows similar decisions from JetBlue and United Airlines, which announced increases last week.

Delta said this is the first time in two years it has increased domestic checked bag fees.

"These updates are part of Delta's ongoing review of pricing across its business and reflect the impact of evolving global conditions and industry dynamics," the airline said in a statement.

Complimentary bag benefits remain unchanged, with the same allotments for Delta SkyMiles Medallion members, customers traveling in First Class, Delta Premium Select and Delta One, active-duty military customers, and those with eligible co-branded Delta SkyMiles American Express Cards.
