State significance

While Virginia’s state legislature and governorship have swung between parties in recent years, the state has voted for the Democratic candidate for president since 2008.

Down the ballot, Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, who was running for reelection, is projected to win against Republican challenger Hung Cao.

The state also faced contentious Democratic and Republican primaries for the U.S. House in June, with incumbent Republican Rep. Bob Good losing the primary in the state’s conservative-leaning 5th Congressional District.

Counties are colored red or blue when the % expected vote reporting reaches a set threshold. This threshold varies by state and is based on patterns of past vote reporting and expectations about how the vote will report this year.
